Overview

The New South Wales Government is revamping its regional rail services with a significant investment. The ambitious Regional Rail Project aims to replace the ageing fleet with 29 new, state-of-the-art trains designed for safety and comfort.

This modernization will not only improve accessibility but will also enhance connectivity across key routes including Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Project Status

In February 2019, the NSW Government contracted Momentum Trains, an international consortium. Their responsibilities include the design, construction, maintenance of the new fleet, and the operation of the Mindyarra Maintenance Centre in Dubbo. The centre is already operational, stimulating the local economy by creating job opportunities.

The project is currently in the testing phase, with the first trains having been moved from Dubbo to the Auburn Heavy Maintenance Centre for assessment of their capabilities.

Key Features of the New Fleet

The Regional Rail fleet will comprise 29 new trains featuring:

  • 117 carriages
  • 10 long regional and 9 short regional trains to replace the XPT and XPLORER services
  • 10 regional intercity trains to replace most of the Endeavour fleet

Enhanced Comfort and Accessibility

  • Comfortable seating arrangements with aeroplane-style overhead luggage storage.
  • Charging ports for mobile devices and tray tables suitable for laptops.
  • Improved accessibility including toilets, wider doors, single-deck carriages, priority seating, and digital information displays.
  • Automatic selective door operation at stations with short platforms.

Modern Amenities

Every carriage will include:

  • Real-time visual displays and audible announcements.
  • A modern buffet car in both long and short regional trains.

Bi-Mode Technology

The introduction of bi-mode technology will allow trains to operate on either diesel or electric power, significantly reducing carbon emissions and promoting an environmentally friendly approach to rail travel.

Employment and Training Opportunities

The Regional Rail Project also prioritizes regional employment by offering opportunities for local residents and supporting diversity, such as:

  • Initiatives to encourage Aboriginal participation in the workforce.
  • Providing training for women in non-traditional trades and opportunities for individuals under 25.

By developing transferable skills, the project aims to build long-term employment prospects within the Central West region of New South Wales.

Budget Overview

The capital budget allocated for the project stands at $2.29 billion, covering the cost to establish the new fleet and infrastructure upgrades across NSW, the ACT, Victoria, and Queensland. An additional $1.35 billion is earmarked for maintenance services over the first 15 years.

Customer-Centric Design Process

Momentum Trains has engaged in extensive consultation with potential customers, service staff, and accessibility experts to refine the design of the new fleet, ensuring the best possible experience for all passengers.

Timeline for Service

While rigorous testing is ongoing, a timeline for initiating passenger services will be provided once testing and relevant verifications are completed on the NSW and Australian rail networks.

Enthusiastic Expectations

The Regional Rail Project represents a transformative leap in public transport for New South Wales, promising improved travel experiences and boosting regional economies while addressing environmental concerns.
